![]() ![]() ![]() There might be some other introductory online courses which are cheaper, but those are less impressive on a resume. This will also put something more official on your resume. I did not have a cartography or databases course, which I wish I did. I took a look and I think that certificate looks like it covers all the basics plus some some stuff I wish my degree covered (Although my degree was split between GIS and Physical Geography). Having guided assignments and having someone to grade, critique, and answer questions would be incredibly valuable, especially in the beginning. If you don't know anything, then it would be tough to know what to ask. Once you have enough basics down, it is easier to google questions. I do think GIS is tough to teach yourself, at least in the beginning.
